What is the Ape Index?

The Ape Index is a measurement used in climbing that compares your arm span to your height. A positive ape index means your arm span is greater than your height, potentially giving you a mechanical advantage in climbing by allowing you to reach holds that might otherwise be out of reach.

Interpretation Guide

  • +6 or more: Exceptional reach advantage
  • +1 to +5: Positive advantage
  • 0: Neutral (equal measurements)
  • -5 to -1: Slight disadvantage
  • -6 or less: Significant disadvantage

Average Ape Index by Group

  • World-class climbers: +1 to +4
  • Recreational climbers: -1 to +2
  • Average adults: -1 to +1
  • Elite swimmers: +2 to +6
  • Basketball players: +3 to +8

How to Measure Correctly

  1. Stand with your back against a wall, heels touching the wall
  2. Have someone mark your height
  3. Extend your arms horizontally like a "T" position
  4. Measure from middle fingertip to middle fingertip
  5. Subtract your height from your arm span (or use our calculator)
