How to Measure for Bike Sizing

Height Measurement

Stand barefoot with your back against a wall. Have someone mark the wall at the top of your head, then measure from the floor to this mark.

Inseam Measurement

Stand with your back against a wall with your feet about 6-8 inches apart. Place a book between your legs, pressing it firmly against your crotch (as if you were sitting on a bike saddle). Make sure the book is level, then measure from the top of the book to the floor.

Understanding Bike Sizing

Road Bikes

Road bikes are typically measured in centimeters from the center of the bottom bracket to the top of the seat tube. The sizing tends to be larger than mountain bikes with the same rider.

Mountain Bikes

Mountain bikes are typically measured in inches. They generally run smaller than road bikes to provide better handling on technical terrain. Standover height is especially important for mountain biking.

Hybrid & City Bikes

These bikes may be measured in either inches or centimeters depending on the manufacturer. They typically have a more relaxed geometry than road bikes for comfort.

Kids Bikes

Kids bikes are primarily sized by wheel diameter rather than frame size. The most important factor is that the child can stand over the bike with both feet flat on the ground.
