About Body Fat Percentage
Body fat percentage is a measurement of the amount of fat tissue in your body compared to your total body weight. It's considered a more accurate measure of fitness than BMI because it distinguishes between fat and muscle mass.
This calculator offers multiple methods to estimate your body fat percentage:
- Navy Method: Uses body circumference measurements and is considered reasonably accurate for most people.
- BMI Method: A simpler estimate based on your BMI, age, and gender. Less accurate but requires minimal measurements.
- Skinfold Method: Uses skinfold thickness measurements. Can be very accurate when done properly with calipers.
For the most accurate results, consistent measurement techniques are important. Consider taking measurements at the same time of day (preferably in the morning) and under similar conditions.
How to Measure
Navy Method Measurements:
- Waist: Measure at the narrowest part of your waist, usually around your navel. Keep the tape parallel to the floor.
- Neck: Measure just below your larynx (Adam's apple), keeping the tape perpendicular to the long axis of your neck.
- Hip (women only): Measure at the widest part of your buttocks with feet together.
Skinfold Measurements:
For skinfold measurements, you'll need a caliper to pinch the skin and measure the thickness of the fold:
- Tricep: Vertical fold on the back of the upper arm, halfway between the shoulder and elbow.
- Subscapular: Diagonal fold taken at the lower angle of the shoulder blade.
- Suprailiac: Diagonal fold above the hip bone.
- Thigh (women): Vertical fold on the front of the thigh, midway between hip and knee.
- Chest (men): Diagonal fold halfway between the nipple and the edge of the chest.
