Stopwatch & Timer Techniques

Athletic Training

  • Use lap function to track interval times
  • Compare splits to identify pacing issues
  • Set countdown timers for rest periods

Productivity

  • Implement Pomodoro technique (25min work/5min break)
  • Time tasks to identify time sinks
  • Use repeating timer for regular reminders

Precision Timing Methods

Manual Timing

For events where electronic timing isn't available, use our stopwatch with lap function. Start on the starting signal, record finishes with lap button. Average multiple timings for better accuracy when possible.

Reaction Time

Measure reaction time by having a subject respond to a visual/audio cue. The timer operator starts the stopwatch on the cue and stops when the response is observed. Human reaction time typically ranges 150-300ms.

Pacing Calculations

Use the time calculator to determine pace requirements. For example, to run 5km in 25 minutes requires 5:00/km pace. Convert between total time and per-unit-time (per km, per mile, per lap) using our time math functions.

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is this digital stopwatch?

Our stopwatch uses your browser's high-resolution time API, which typically provides accuracy within 5 milliseconds. Actual accuracy depends on your device's hardware and system load. For competitive timing, dedicated hardware timers are recommended.

Can I save my lap times or timer settings?

While we don't currently save data permanently, you can copy/paste lap times or take screenshots. Your timer settings will persist during your current session unless you refresh the page.

Why does my timer sometimes drift over long periods?

Browser JavaScript isn't real-time and can be delayed by system processes. For long timers (hours+), small delays may accumulate. For critical long-duration timing, consider dedicated timer applications.

How do I time events where I can't see the screen?

Enable the alert sound option in the timer settings. You can also use keyboard shortcuts (Space to start/stop stopwatch, L for lap) without looking at the screen.

Can I use this for scientific experiments?

This tool is suitable for informal timing needs. For scientific research requiring high precision and controlled conditions, specialized laboratory timing equipment should be used instead.
