Jacket Size Guide & Measuring Tips

How to Measure for a Jacket

Follow these steps to get accurate measurements for your jacket size:

Chest Measurement

  1. Stand with arms relaxed at your sides.
  2. Have someone wrap a measuring tape around the fullest part of your chest.
  3. Keep the tape parallel to the floor and not too tight.
  4. Take a normal breath before reading the measurement.

Sleeve Length

  1. Stand with your arm slightly bent at your side.
  2. Measure from the center back of your neck, across your shoulder, and down to just past your wrist bone.
  3. This measurement determines your sleeve length.

Shoulder Width

  1. Measure from the outer edge of one shoulder to the outer edge of the other.
  2. Measure straight across your upper back from one shoulder bone to the other.

Factors That Affect Jacket Fit

Body Type

Different body types require different adjustments:

  • Athletic builds may need a looser fit across chest and shoulders
  • Slim builds often benefit from fitted or slim-cut jackets
  • Stocky builds might need roomier cuts with more tapering

Jacket Style

Different jacket styles have different fit expectations:

  • Suit jackets typically have a more structured, tailored fit
  • Casual jackets may allow for more room and movement
  • Winter coats should allow space for layers underneath

Brand Variations

Sizing can vary between brands:

  • European brands often run slimmer than American brands
  • Designer labels may have their own unique sizing standards
  • Always check the specific brand's size chart when possible

Signs of a Well-Fitting Jacket

Shoulders

The jacket shoulder seams should align with your natural shoulder edges, neither extending beyond nor falling short.

Chest

When buttoned, there should be no pulling or gaping across the chest. You should be able to fit a flat hand between your chest and the jacket.

Sleeve Length

Sleeves should end at the wrist bone, allowing about ¼ to ½ inch of shirt sleeve to show.

Jacket Length

A traditional jacket should cover your seat, while more modern cuts might be slightly shorter. The bottom of the jacket should align with your knuckles when your arms hang naturally at your sides.
