Understanding Leap Years
A leap year is a calendar year that contains an additional day added to keep the calendar year synchronized with the astronomical year. Without leap years, our calendar would slowly drift out of alignment with the Earth's seasons.
Leap Year Rules
The rules for determining a leap year are as follows:
- Rule 1: A year is a leap year if it is divisible by 4
- Rule 2: However, if the year is divisible by 100, it is NOT a leap year, unless...
- Rule 3: The year is also divisible by 400, then it IS a leap year
For example:
- 2020 is a leap year (divisible by 4 and not by 100)
- 2000 is a leap year (divisible by 400)
- 1900 is NOT a leap year (divisible by 100 but not by 400)
- 2023 is NOT a leap year (not divisible by 4)
Why Do We Need Leap Years?
The Earth takes approximately 365.25 days to orbit the sun. Without leap years, our calendar would fall out of sync with the solar year by about 1 day every 4 years. Over time, this would cause the seasons to shift on the calendar. After about 100 years, the calendar would be off by nearly a month!
