Measuring Tips: For chest, measure around the fullest part. For neck, measure around the base where your collar would sit. For sleeve length, measure from the center back of your neck, over your shoulder, and down to your wrist.
How to Measure for Shirts
Chest Measurement
- Stand up straight with your arms relaxed at your sides.
- Wrap a measuring tape around the fullest part of your chest, under your armpits.
- Keep the tape parallel to the floor and comfortably snug, not tight.
- Take a normal breath before reading the measurement.
Neck Measurement
- Place the measuring tape around the base of your neck, where a collar would sit.
- Insert one finger between the tape and your neck for comfort.
- This measurement is particularly important for dress shirts and button-up collars.
Sleeve Length Measurement
- Stand with your arm slightly bent at the elbow.
- Start the measuring tape at the center back of your neck.
- Run it over the top of your shoulder, down your arm to where you want the cuff to end (typically at the wrist bone).
- For the most accurate measurement, have someone help you.
Understanding Shirt Size Variations
Shirt sizes can vary significantly between brands, styles, and countries. Here's what you should know:
- US Sizing: Often uses letter sizes (S, M, L, XL) or neck and sleeve measurements for dress shirts (e.g., 15/33).
- EU Sizing: Uses numerical sizes that typically range from 36-46 for women and 36-50 for men.
- UK Sizing: Similar to US sizing for casual shirts, but may use collar sizes for dress shirts.
- Alpha Sizing: The general S, M, L, XL system varies significantly between brands.
- Dress Shirt Sizing: Often uses a combination of neck circumference and sleeve length (e.g., 16/34-35).
Tips for the Perfect Shirt Fit
- The shoulder seams should align with the edge of your shoulders.
- You should be able to fit 1-2 fingers between the collar and your neck.
- The cuffs should reach your wrist bone when your arms are at your sides.
- For casual shirts, there should be about 2-3 inches of room in the chest area.
- The shirt should be long enough to stay tucked in when raising your arms (for dress shirts).
- For women's shirts, ensure there's no pulling or gaping between buttons in the bust area.
